Characteristics of Art Deco Perfume Bottles

Nothing says glamour like a gorgeous perfume bottle sitting on a pretty vanity, sparkling in the light of a glittering chandelier.

Silver Screen Goddesses must have had quite the collection of dazzling perfume bottles to choose from on their dressing tables.

There's just something magical and alluring about perfume bottles...a girl just can't turn away from an twinkling little bottle of intoxicating fragrance.

Original Art Deco Perfume Bottles

The most recognizable of all perfume bottles is Chanel No 5.  The perfume was created in 1921 and its bottle is the epitome of Art Deco design - simple, sleek and sexy as hell.  The glass bottle is essentially a simple, neat rectangle with an octagonal stopper, resembling the top of the Place Vendome column in Paris.

Lalique Perfume Bottles

Rene Lalique's delicate glass perfume bottles also represent the ultra modern Art Deco style and are in hot demand by today's collectors.

Lalique's perfume bottles were primarily made for Coty's fragrances and would typically depict geometric patterns, bird motifs and sometimes stylized or elongated faces.

They were usually made of opalescent glass which gave the bottles a very clean, modern appearance - very typical of Art Deco design.  Read my Rene Lalique post to learn more about the artist and his works.

Baccarat Crystal Perfume Bottles

Baccarat Crystal produced a plethora of perfume bottles during the early 19th Century for distinguished perfume houses such as Guerlain, Jean Patou, Elizabeth Arden and Lentheric.

Only the highest quality crystal was used in the production of these luxurious perfume bottles - intoxicating fragrance wasn't the only thing contained in these little vessels - luxury oozed out by the gallon, right along with the delicious scents!

The bottles were all highly architectural in appearance - strong angular patterns, prism forms, diamond shapes and oriental fans were common designs.

Where To Buy Art Deco Perfume Bottles

Perfumes like Chanel No 5 and Shalimar are readily available at most Department Store fragrance counters.  Rarer Art Deco bottles can be purchased at antique shops or various online vintage stores.

Just make sure that you are purchasing from an authentic perfume bottle dealer as genuine Art Deco perfume bottles can be quite expensive and you want to be sure you are getting the real deal.  An original Lalique or Baccarat perfume bottle should have the mark of the company stamped on the bottom.

Art Deco inspired perfume bottles can be purchased from a variety of retailers and wholesalers, both online and offline.  Art Deco style is quite easy to identify, but if you're still a bit hesitant here are a few guidelines to help you identify it...
